Chandigarh: UT Police filed a case against unknown persons for allegedly extorting money from a dentist in Sector 19 by threatening him with implication in the case of a minor's rape. The dentist claimed to have paid the accused 36,500 Canadian dollars (around Rs 22 lakh).
The accused allegedly filed a rape complaint against the dentist and extorted money from him to not pursue the FIR. However, Sector 19 police also registered a Zero FIR of rape against the complainant. No arrest has been made so far.
Gurcharan Singh, a resident of Sector 19, said that he runs a dental clinic at Mullanpur, Mohali. A few days ago, he received a call from an unknown person, who allegedly introduced himself as an advocate and accused him of raping a minor girl a few years ago, on whose behalf he was calling. The caller allegedly threatened to lodge an FIR on charges of rape against him.
Later, he allegedly demanded Rs 5 lakh from the dentist for not pursuing the case. The complainant recorded the conversation on his phone and filed a complaint at the SSP public window, which was forwarded to the Sector 19 police station. DSP, east division, Dilbagh Singh, is investigating the allegations against the dentist. Sector 19 police summoned Gurcharan Singh to join the inquiry. Later, police traced the caller and the woman who was allegedly raped. They were also called to the police station. The woman claimed to be a minor at the time of the alleged rape.
The dentist alleged that after he received the call, he met sub-inspector Ashok Kumar and Usha Rani, SHO, Sector 19 police station, who allegedly pressured him into entering a compromise with the opposite party. The cops also allegedly threatened him saying that a statement from a minor was sufficient for registration of a rape case.
Later, the dentist alleged that the accused raised the extortion amount to Rs 30 lakh. He said that he gave 36,500 Canadian dollars in cash to the accused in Mullanpur on April 14, 2025. However, the complainant has no evidence of payment. He also denied having met the woman before. He claimed that he paid the money under pressure from the cops to arrive at a compromise with the woman.
After taking the money, police allegedly took his signature on a compromise agreement to dispose of his public window complaint. On the other hand, Usha Rani, SHO, Sector 19 police station, denied the allegations levelled against her and other cops. She claimed that the dentist and the woman knew each other. The woman also filed a complaint against the dentist for raping her in a hotel room after giving her some sedatives. The Zero FIR is being sent to Mullanpur police station for investigation.
